First Anniversary 16th January 2022

Deeply loved and adored husband of Gillian and dad of Jennifer, Harry, Hugh and Josh. On this, the first anniversary of John’s passing we would like to acknowledge and thank those who have helped and supported us throughout John’s illness and during this past year. We would especially like to thank Ms Mag Allen, Oncology Advanced Nurse Practitioner CUH, Dr Richard Bambury, Medical Oncologist CUH, Ms Maureen Murphy PHN, Millstreet and our GP Dr Bertie Daly, Newmarket.  John was honoured to have known you and privileged to have been able to call each of you a colleague and a friend. We wish to thank Davy, Cora and Elaine of Tarrant’s Funeral Directors for their kindness and professionalism; the management and staff of Millstreet Community School for taking such good care of the children during John’s illness and over the past year; Fr Kevin O’Sullivan for the beautiful Mass to celebrate John’s life; John’s colleagues at HSE and Gillian’s colleagues at MTU for their unwavering support throughout John’s illness and over this last year; the children’s many friends for bringing joy and laughter back into their lives and into our home this past year; our many friends, close neighbours and family who have shown us such love and support through what has been the toughest of times. We are honoured that we have raised funds for Marymount University Hospital and CUH through a Gofundme campaign set up in John’s memory and we are eternally grateful to all who have donated. The fund will help establish a permanent Acute Oncology Unit in CUH. This is a fitting tribute to John and a most appropriate legacy recognising his commitment to healthcare improvement, his dedication to nursing and his strong links with CUH throughout his career.

Eily’s Report 11th January

Dia is Mhuire díobh go léir a chairde and welcome to my weekly Report.

Well I have it, I have Covid19, tested positive five or six days ago. Earlier trials proved negative and how I dreaded the wait to see if the second red line would move along and put me among the condemned. For a day or two about a week ago I didn’t feel great so I ventured on another test, a move I didn’t take lightly because the word was out that testers were in short supply. To make sure of doing it right I didn’t spare my poor nostrils, followed the rules to a tee and waited and then low and behold the second line reddened up. This time instead of feeling any sense of alarm, I was rather more relieved. Glad in a way that the waiting was over and there was nothing to do for it but hope for the best, listen to the body a give it all the help I could to help it cope.   Other members of the family ranging in age from 10 to 38, were already a week into their isolation and doing fine apart from headaches and stuffy noses. Now I’m the same. Having the advantage of my age I had the added guard of the booster in my system.

Winnie the Pooh MDF laser cut craft shapes

We thank Presenter, John Greene for advance information on this Sunday evening’s programme – 9th Jan. 2022 at 7pm on C103.  (S.R.)

Where The Road Takes Me – Sunday 9th Jan.

When British based pop star Manfred Mann discovers that his mother Alma intends selling up all she owns in Johannesburg and moving to Kanturk to marry a local man, he is concerned.  But his fears are unfounded as Donal and Alma spend many happy years together.

In the first of a two part programme on Where the road takes me, John Greene discovers how a simple exchange of Penpal letters between Kanturk and South Africa results in romance and eventual marriage.

Manfred Mann, for his part agrees to contribute to the story and the programme, if a promise is honoured to search for a local couple, who he says went far beyond what was expected of them as carers for his mother, especially during her final days.

This two part programme has everything…….

Romance, escaping apartheid, avoiding music’s drug culture of the 60s and 70s, the search for Jackie and Teresa and of course the story and hit songs of Manfred Mann and later Manfred Mann’s Earthband. [read more …] ““Where the Road Takes Me” at 7pm this Sunday on C103″
